Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, the backbone of the Explore Yoga schedule, was brought to the West by students of founder Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 1970s from its origin in Mysore, India. It laid the foundation of the popularized Western practices of Power Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, and others. The system, based on set sequences that progress in difficulty, harnesses the breath, gaze, and postures for a full sensory immersion that strengthens and purifies the body through the vinyasa system. Students learn the practice and can take it anywhere, using the religious aspects of the physical practice as a mirror for the development of mental clarity, strength, and stability.
This 1 hour athletic indoor cycling class is geared toward specific cycling goals. Matt Davis, a National Champion cyclist, has designed classes that will focus on interval training, endurance and recovery. All fitness levels encouraged to attend.
Spin & Stretch
This upbeat class will incorporate a 30-45 minute cardio workout on a stationary spin bike with a 15 minute Vinyasa Flow. The Stretch portion of the class is geared toward lengthening specific targeted muscles in the body i.e. inner and outer hips, hamstrings, chest, neck and shoulders. Leave this class feeling strong, invigorated and refreshed!
This class guides students through gentle stretches assisted by various props. Students explore deep breathing techniques that help calm the mind and rejuvenate the body to move through the day in peace. 60 minutes
Gentle Vinyasa Flow
This class introduces students to the practice of Vinyasa yoga with gentle poses, measured breathing, and meditation techniques. Students are encouraged to explore the body with safe and effective movements that aim to achieve total body wellness. 60 minutes
This class is perfect for anyone new to yoga. Students learn how to safely enter asanas (postures) and use modifications to get the most out of poses. Each class focuses on different aspects of the practice, including breath, the Vinyasa, internal muscle locks, and eye gazes. 75 minutes
Vinyasa Yoga sometimes referred to as Power Yoga, pulls its foundations from the Ashtanga tradition – focus on Sun Salutations, breath and movement and progressive difficulty. Vinyasa classes provide a simple physicality to students of yoga who look for variation, flexibility and creative expression in their practice. Explore offers varying degrees of difficulty in Vinyasa-styled classes, serving beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
Strongpose, a practice that combines yoga and weight training through the use of Kettlebells, is the brainchild of Explore Yoga founder Adrienne Davis. The system, built on the bedrock of Vinyasa Yoga, is a mindful approach to strength training. It uses the values of yoga to attain total body health. Strongpose encourages a mind-body connection, breath control, internal muscle locks, strength and balance using only a Kettlebell and a yoga mat.
Meditation is a universally understood practice of uniting mind and body through breath traditionally in a seated posture. The method returns its practitioners to their home in their native Self, which Western life can obscure through a cultural focus on external achievement, consumption, and conflict. Thursday evening meditation features Refuge Meditation Group leader and author Ben Riggs.
